After School Programs

Kids Cafe

Kids Cafe is a nationwide program of Feeding America that provides healthy after-school meals to hungry children, ages 1- 18 years old, along with nutrition education, enrichment and activities. Our local Kids Cafe program has grown from a lone pilot site feeding an average of 54 children in 2005 to multiple locations serving over 98,000 meals to local children in need each year.

Kids Cafe is partially funded through the SFSP and CACFP program. These reimbursements do not completely cover costs. Grants and donations from our supporters ensure that this program continues. Their support is essential to ensure the children being served through Kids Cafe will continue to have access to warm meals at the end of each day.

The local Wichita Falls Area Food Bank's Kids Cafe program
feeds children at several youth service clubs.

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

Having enough nutritious food is critical to a child’s physical and emotional development and their ability to achieve academically. One in four children in our service area face food insecurity. Many of these children eat breakfast and lunch at their schools, but the problem arises on weekends and during summer break when they do not have enough to eat. These are especially difficult times for families who are experiencing food-insecurity.

PowerPak 4 Kids Back Pack Program

Our PowerPak program is one of the most effective options to address weekend hunger in children. Nutritious and easy to prepare foods, including whole grain cereals, trail mix, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, and fruit juices, are bagged and provided to children in need at school on Fridays so they can obtain necessary nutrients over the weekend and return to school on Monday, nourished and ready to learn. The program focuses on food-insecure children up to 18 years old and is coordinated by our Child Hunger department who secure, sort, and deliver the PowerPaks, work closely with the schools to identify and serve food-insecure children, and manage a robust volunteer program that is full of dedicated community members who are passionate about PowerPak4Kids. In 2022 we handed out over 56,000 PowerPaks to children in need!

Please contact Jim McMahan at 940-766-2322 for more information.

Summer Food Service Program

SFSP

The Summer Meals Program provides meals at no cost to children and teens 18 years old and younger in low-income areas.

Participating families do not have to apply register or provide identification. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the Summer Meals Program – including the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers the Summer Meals Program in Texas.

Grants and donations from our supporters ensure that this program continues. Their support is essential to ensure the children being served through Summer Feeding Programs will continue to have access to warm meals each day at lunch in the summer.

The program will run from June 3rd through August 2nd at the W.F. Boys & Girls Clubs and June 3rd through August 14th at Southside Youth Center in Wichita Falls and June 10th through August 9th in Burkburnett.
