The Wichita Falls Area Food Bank is one step closer to having the funds needed to break ground on its new facility, thanks to a donation from a local nonprofit.

The Junior League of Wichita Falls presented a $25,000 contribution toward the project, which is set to be built at 2901 Hammon Road.

With the donation, food bank officials said they have now raised nearly 75% of the more than $18 million needed to begin construction on the new distribution and education center.

The new facility will allow the food bank to better serve the 12 counties it supports through increased food distribution and new educational opportunities.

“This is going to be the first time in the history of the food bank that we’re going to be able to have educational classes offered across 12 counties at our own facility. We’re going to be able to triple the impact for our neighbors experiencing hunger with the new facility,” philanthropy director for the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank Julie Nawrocki said.

The Junior League of Wichita Falls has worked with the food bank for 25 years, and member Stacy Finley said it is an honor to support the organization and its future growth.

“We are super excited. We have been sitting and waiting for them to go public. We actually voted on this in November of last year, and we’ve been patiently waiting to be able to tell everybody how excited we are to help the food bank, watch it continue to grow, and be another partner for another 25 years,” Finley said.

Nawrocki said the food bank is grateful for every donation and that all contributions help move the project closer to reality.

“Every single donation has an impact. For our neighbors who get online and say, Gosh, I’m able to do $50, or I’m able to do $25,000; every donation matters. We have donors who have been incredible and donated hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars. We need contributions from all of our neighbors for whatever they can give, and we’re just so grateful,” Nawrocki said.

At this time, the food bank still needs to raise around $4 million to make the new facility a reality.
