The Wichita Falls Area Food Bank is $50,000 closer to its multimillion-dollar goal of building a new distribution center after receiving a major donation from United Supermarkets.

Representatives from United Supermarkets presented the $50,000 check Tuesday morning to support construction of the new James N. McCoy Foundation Distribution and Education Center.

The new facility is expected to significantly expand the food bank’s ability to serve families experiencing food insecurity across its 12-county service area.

“It’s incredibly meaningful, not just the gift itself,” said Wichita Falls Area Food Bank CEO David O’Neil. “What the gift means is the gift will allow us to build a new building, which means more space for us to provide more nourishment to more individuals facing hunger all across our 12 counties.”

United Supermarkets also emphasized the importance of supporting the food bank’s mission.

“Wichita Falls Food Bank has been a very vital part of this community, and we’re just happy to be part of it,” a United Supermarkets representative said.

O’Neil said there’s still work to do to reach the campaign’s fundraising goal, and donations of any size are always welcome.
